How to Replace a MacBook Keyboard Key: A DIY Guide
Published on June 22, 2026 • DIY Repair Guides
Replacing an individual keycap and hinge clip on your MacBook is a straightforward DIY repair that takes under two minutes. You do not need to pay for a costly top-case replacement or visit an Apple Store.
Tools Needed
- A new replacement keycap & hinge clip set
- A small flathead screwdriver, plastic pry tool, or spudger
- Compressed air (optional, to clean out dust)
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Remove the Old Keycap & Damaged Hinge
Gently slide your plastic pry tool under the top edge of the keycap. Pry upward carefully until the keycap pops off the hinge clip. If the plastic hinge clip underneath is broken, slide the pry tool under the clip to release it from the small metal brackets on the keyboard base.
2. Install the New Hinge Clip
Identify the orientation of the new hinge clip. Place it onto the keyboard base, align it with the metal loops, and press down gently. It should snap flat into place and move up and down freely when pressed.
3. Attach the New Keycap
For Scissor Keys: Position the keycap centered over the hinge clip, then press straight down firmly until you hear a click on all four corners.
For Butterfly Keys: Slide the top edge of the keycap under the small metal hooks at the top of the key socket first, then press down firmly on the bottom edge to snap it in.
